Pool Heating

Efficient, low-carbon heating designed around your property

A ground source heat pump uses natural heat stored beneath the ground to provide heating and hot water for your home. Because ground temperatures remain more stable than the air above, a ground source system can offer reliable, efficient performance throughout the year.

Whether you’re planning a new build, renovating a rural property, replacing oil or LPG heating, or looking for a long-term low-carbon solution, Solaris Energy can help you understand whether ground source heating is right for your home.

From initial advice and feasibility checks to system design, installation and aftercare, our experienced team will guide you through every stage of the process.

Smarter home Heating

Benefits of a Ground Source Heat Pump

  • Highly Efficient

Ground source systems use stable heat from the earth to provide efficient heating and hot water throughout the year.

  • Lower-Carbon

Reduce your reliance on fossil fuels with a cleaner heating system designed for long-term home comfort.

  • Quiet & Discreet

With no outdoor fan unit, ground source heat pumps are quiet and have minimal visual impact on the outside of your home.

  • Year-Round Performance

Because ground temperatures stay more consistent than outside air, performance is less affected by seasonal weather changes.

Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

  • Buried pipework collects heat from the ground and transfers it to the heat pump. The system uses electricity to raise that heat to a useful temperature for your home’s heating and stored hot water.

  • It can be suitable for existing homes as well as new builds. The assessment considers heat demand, available land, ground conditions, access for machinery and the indoor heating system. These factors determine whether ground source is a practical option.

  • There is no single minimum that suits every property. Horizontal collectors need enough land for the required pipework. Vertical boreholes use a smaller surface area, but still need suitable geology and access for drilling equipment. The design depends on your home’s heat demand.

  • Horizontal collectors are laid in trenches across an area of land. Vertical boreholes place pipework deeper underground. Available space, ground conditions, access and budget help determine the more suitable approach for your property.

  • Yes. A suitably designed system can provide space heating and heat water stored in a compatible cylinder. Cylinder capacity and hot water settings should reflect the number of occupants and how the household uses hot water.

  • Yes. Ground source systems use heat from below the surface, where temperatures are more stable than outdoor air. The collector and heat pump still need to be correctly sized to meet the property’s heating demand through colder weather.

  • It often has a higher upfront cost because of excavation, drilling and collector installation. The right comparison includes site conditions, installation costs and expected operation over time. Solaris can help assess which option makes practical and financial sense for your property.

  • Qualifying ground source installations in England and Wales may be supported by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligibility depends on the property and system being installed. We can explain the current requirements and the application process before you commit.

Grants and Support

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Support

Eligible homeowners in England and Wales may be able to receive £7,500 towards a qualifying air source or ground source heat pump installation through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The scheme is designed to reduce the upfront cost of replacing fossil fuel or electric heating with a low-carbon heating system.

Solaris Energy can help you understand whether your property may qualify and guide you through the process. The scheme is installer-led, which means an MCS-certified installer applies for and redeems the voucher on behalf of the property owner.

Installation options

The right Ground Source System for Your Home

There is more than one way to collect heat from the ground. The best option depends on your property, land area, ground conditions, access and heating demand.

01.

Horizontal collectors

Horizontal ground loops are buried in trenches below the surface. They can be a cost-effective option for properties with enough available land, such as rural homes, large gardens, farmhouses or self-build plots. Solaris’ current page describes horizontal systems as suitable for larger properties where loops can be laid in trenches.

02.

Vertical boreholes

Ideal for properties with limited outdoor space, vertical boreholes are drilled into the ground to access heat stored below the surface. Solaris will assess your site, heating needs and ground conditions to recommend the right approach.

03.

Open-Loop Systems

Suitable for some properties with access to a reliable water source, open-loop systems use heat from water to support your home’s heating and hot water. Solaris will assess the source, flow and site conditions to confirm whether this is a practical option.
